Mayor Johnson to attend fallen officer’s funeral despite family’s request not to

CHICAGO — Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office announced Friday that he will attend the funeral of a fallen Chicago police officer , despite a recent claim that family members of the officer do not want him to.

Officer Enrique Martinez was shot and killed in the line of duty on the city’s South Side on Monday, Nov. 4.

The 26-year-old officer had been with the department for nearly three years and had been working out of the 6th District at the time of his death.

Funeral services for the fallen officer are set to take place on Monday and John Catanzara, the President of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police, said in a YouTube video shared on Nov. 11, that family members of Martinez had requested that Mayor Johnson and Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker not attend the services.

On Friday night, spokesmen and friends of the Martinez family held a press conference after learning Johnson announced he planned on attending Martinez’s services, despite his family insisting he not attend.
