Food Vendor with Concealed-Carry License Kills Armed Suspect in Austin Incident

Exchange of gunfire leaves suspect dead, vendor injured

CHICAGO — A food vendor with an Illinois Concealed-Carry License (CCL) fatally shot a man who confronted him with a gun during an altercation in Chicago’s South Austin neighborhood on Friday night, according to police.

The incident occurred in the 300 block of South Central Avenue just before 9 p.m. Authorities reported that a 30-year-old man approached the 35-year-old vendor, leading to a brief struggle between the two individuals.

During the confrontation, the suspect pulled out a firearm. The vendor, who was legally armed, also drew his weapon, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The vendor was struck in the right arm during the exchange. He was taken to Stroger Hospital and is reported to be in good condition.

Police recovered two firearms at the scene and confirmed that Area Four detectives are actively investigating the incident. No further details about the altercation or those involved have been released at this time.
