Chicago police fatally shoot knife-wielding man in West Side apartment; COPA investigating

CHICAGO — The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating after a man armed with a knife was shot and killed by Chicago police on the city’s West Side.

The shooting happened around 2:10 a.m. Friday on the 3000 block of 21st Place.

According to a preliminary police statement, officers responded to a call of a person with a knife inside a sixth-floor apartment.

Upon arrival, officers knocked on an apartment door and were confronted by a man, who produced a knife and advanced at them.

Police said officers discharged their weapons, striking the man multiple times. Officers rendered aid to the man, who was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The man’s identity has not yet been released.

Two officers were transported to a nearby hospital for observation.

The Investigative Response Team is currently on the scene investigating. The shooting is being investigated by COPA with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.
