HUD awards millions in disaster recovery funds to City of Chicago, surrounding areas for those impacted by flooding in 2023, 2024

CHICAGO — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development had representatives in Chicago on Wednesday for a major funding announcement for residents impacted by natural disasters in 2023 and 2024.

HUD senior officials traveled to the city’s West Side and presented checks to not only Cook County and the City of Chicago but also other municipalities that were impacted by major rain and flooding two years ago.

“I had just gotten my basement done, maybe 3 years before this came in. Everything new in my basement,” West Side Resident Queen Jackson, who was impacted by the natural disasters, said.

Jackson is one of many West Side residents who felt the impact of record rainfall from 2023 and 2024, which made its way into people’s homes.

“FEMA gave me a little but it wasn’t much. I had to go off the bat and buy a new hot water tank. Then I found out my furnace wasn’t working,” Jackson said.

On Wednesday, disaster funding was awarded as a result. More than $426 million was awarded to the City of Chicago, Cook County received more than $244 million and the Town of Cicero received just over $96 million.
