ATM thieves are using an SUV to rip doors off stores, Chicago police say

CHICAGO — A group of burglars is using an SUV to rip the doors off businesses so they can steal ATMs, Chicago police said in a new community alert. The crew targeted at least four businesses in December.

CPD said up to eight people were involved in the crimes. They put a chain on the front doors or shutters of a business and attached the other end of the chain to an SUV, police said. Once the chain is secure, the SUV’s driver accelerates, ripping the business open.

The burglars, some of whom are armed, proceed to steal ATMs from the compromised storefronts…
