With South Shore Walgreens Closing, Ald.’s Proposed Zoning Change A ‘Chess Move’ To Influence Company

SOUTH SHORE — An alderperson’s push to rezone a South Shore Walgreens is a power play to get the company on board with neighbors’ wishes for a new business on the site — not a serious plan to build apartments there, he said.

Ald. Desmon Yancy (5th) has applied to rezone Walgreens, 7109 S. Jeffery Blvd., from a “community shopping district” to a “residential multi-unit district,” according to a public notice posted on a pole immediately north of the building.

Yancy applied Jan. 15 to rezone the property, which includes 2007 E. 71st St., according to the notice. He did so on the same day Walgreens announced it would shutter that store and four others on the South and Southwest sides by the end of February…
