CHICAGO — Authorities are trying to track down an illegal migrant and suspected Tren de Aragua gang member after prosecutors unexpectedly dropped his domestic violence case last week in an unscheduled court hearing that he did not attend.
CWBChicago has also learned that Chicago police initially tried to charge the man, 33-year-old Pedro Colmenares, with felony sexual assault and kidnapping charges instead of misdemeanor domestic battery, but prosecutors rejected those efforts and then dropped the charges last Monday, about two weeks before Colmenares was scheduled to make a first appearance, according to court records.
A spokesperson for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office confirmed that prosecutors denied felony charges in the case, saying the office “initially determined that the available evidence was insufficient to meet our burden of proof to file felony charges, leading to police filing a misdemeanor domestic battery charge.”…
