DOGE announces closures of 6 Central IL buildings

CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Six federal buildings in Central Illinois may close soon due to budget cuts.

The Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, has been cutting spending by ending leases in every state. This week, it announced more cuts with nearly 750 real estate leases across the country on the chopping block, including four buildings in Springfield and two in Champaign.

According to DOGE, this is approximately 10% of the entire federal government’s own real estate.

In a statement posted by the General Services Administration, courthouses, land ports of entry, and facilities critical to our national defense and law enforcement will all be kept as “core assets”. Officials consider many offices and have evaluated many of them to be “functionally obsolete.”…
