2025 is shaping up to be a year of unprecedented retail closures in the US, with industry behemoths set to close thousands of stores nationwide, including numerous Kohl’s locations.
The department store giant has confirmed that 27 underperforming stores will shut down by April. “We always take these decisions very seriously,” expressed Tom Kingsbury, the former CEO of Kohl’s, during a January announcement.
“As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

Despite operating over 1,150 stores across the US, excluding Hawaii, Kohl’s maintains confidence in the “continues to believe in health and strength of its profitable store base,” yet acknowledges that “these specific locations were underperforming stores.”…
