6 transported to hospital, 5 with critical injuries, after Kenwood apartment fire overnight: CFD

CHICAGO — Six people were transported to University of Chicago Hospital, five with critical injuries, following a fire overnight at a multi-family apartment building in Kenwood on the city’s South Side, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson.

When firefighters got the call, they heard that some people had jumped from the back of the building to escape the fire. A neighbor corroborated that.

“A couple people had to jump,” neighbor Elaine Mason said. “… I just saw them pick (a) body up off the ground and put it on a gurney, and I just saw the paramedics running with big bags.”

CFD says the fire broke out just after 4 a.m. Sunday at the building in the 1200 block of East 46th Street. When firefighters arrived, they encountered flames at the back of the building and found several victims on the third floor. Crews were seen helping people who had been sleeping get away from the building in pajamas, T-shirts and shorts, with no shoes on…
