Evanston man charged with attempted murder, accused of shooting at family members

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office charged 57-year-old Evanston resident John Ross Sr. with two counts of attempted first degree murder for allegedly shooting at two victims, at least one a family member, on Saturday night, May 3, police said in a press release published Monday afternoon.

According to the Evanston Police Department, Ross got into a verbal altercation with a family member, a 34-year-old Evanston man, at Ross’ home in the 2300 block of Greenwood Street. The two victims — the 34-year-old and a 48-year-old man, also of Evanston — left the residence when Ross opened fire on their van, EPD said. Neither victim was injured.

“Responding officers recovered multiple spent shell casings at the Greenwood Street scene and ballistic evidence from the van,” police reported in Monday’s press release. “An uninvolved family member was safely evacuated from the home, and Ross was confirmed to be inside. He surrendered to police without incident at approximately 9:40 p.m.”…
