One Dead, Nine Injured as Chicago Confronts Spike in Gun Violence on Summer’s Start

Chicago’s summer began with a surge of gun violence, leaving one person dead and nine others injured in a series of shootings that plagued the city from Thursday evening into early Friday. The shootings spanned multiple neighborhoods, but the Englewood area was particularly afflicted, bearing the brunt of this violent outbreak.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, two men, ages 30 and 34, were critically wounded to kick off the evening’s violence in Englewood at around 7:50 p.m. Thursday when a car pulled up and three gunmen emerged, discharging their weapons. Within hours, a 32-year-old man was shot and later pronounced dead after being attacked just after 9:00 p.m. on West 63rd Street, also in Englewood. Temperatures were anticipated to hit the high 90s over the weekend, and historically, hotter temperatures have correlated with more gun violence, but no one has been arrested in connection to any of these incidents.

The shootings did not remain confined to Englewood. The WGN-TV report noted that an 18-year-old man was shot around 11:27 p.m. Thursday on the Near North Side, and shortly before 3 a.m. a man was injured when he attempted to confront individuals breaking into his car on the Near South Side. Other shootings occurred throughout the city, with victims ranging in age from 18 to 56 years old…
