Chicago police recorded five homicides and 18 non-fatal shootings over the weekend, the best performance for the same weekend in at least a decade, according to HeyJackass, a site that independently tracks Chicago crime data.
The most high-profile case was the fatal stabbing of a 56-year-old man at the Navy Pier beer garden on Sunday evening. An internal CPD document said the slaying occurred during a “domestic altercation” between the victim and a 64-year-old man who is in custody. The older man also suffered a laceration to his chest, but his injuries were not life-threatening, officials said.
In another case reported by CWBChicago, it took first responders 16 minutes to find a 20-year-old woman who was shot in Washington Park on Friday evening because the 911 caller gave the wrong address, and the city’s ShotSpotter network, dismantled in September by Mayor Brandon Johnson, was unable to provide the correct information.
