New details have emerged about a major firearms trafficking investigation that officials revealed in a press release over the weekend. Four adults and a 17-year-old boy face gunrunning and other felony charges for allegedly completing a series of firearm sales to undercover agents during May and June.
In detention proffers filed against the adult defendants, prosecutors detailed the joint federal and state investigation that allegedly involved the sale of 38 guns and several machine gun conversion devices that the group allegedly trafficked to Chicago from Indiana. Machine gun conversion devices, often called “Glock switches,” are small mechanisms that enable a semi-automatic firearm to fire continuously with one trigger pull, effectively converting it into a machine gun.
The probe began after investigators learned Justin Anderson, 19, of Indianapolis had been advertising firearms for sale on social media, prosecutors said.
