CHICAGO — A group of five individuals is being sought by police following a violent armed robbery aboard a CTA Red Line train that left a woman assaulted and shaken. The incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. on June 21 as the train approached the 69th Street station on Chicago’s South Side.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the victim was physically attacked by several offenders who worked together to forcibly take her backpack. During the attack, one of the suspects produced a knife and used it to cut the backpack straps, allowing the group to flee with her belongings as the train pulled into the station.
Surveillance Images Released
Mass Transit Detectives have released surveillance images of five individuals believed to be connected to the robbery. These images, captured by CTA security cameras, show the suspects on the train shortly before and after the incident.
Police have not confirmed whether the suspects knew each other or if this was a coordinated robbery targeting the specific victim or a random act. The incident has reignited concerns over safety on public transit, especially during late-night hours when fewer passengers and security personnel are present.
Transit Safety Advisory
In light of the attack, authorities are urging Red Line passengers — and all CTA users — to take extra precautions:
- Sit near the train conductor’s car whenever possible
- Keep valuables hidden and avoid displaying expensive items or electronics
- Limit cell phone use in open view, especially during off-peak hours
- Be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious behavior
