Man lied about stolen gun — then used it in new shooting while on ankle monitor: prosecutors

A Chicago man who allegedly pistol-whipped and held a woman at gunpoint in April, only to be released on electronic monitoring, is now facing new charges for firing a pistol on the Near West Side — the same one he falsely reported stolen in the wake of his April arrest, according to prosecutors.

Raphael Morales, 33, was arrested early on April 12 after Chicago police said they saw him shoot at a car while chasing it through the city’s West Side and later found him holding a handgun to a woman’s face.

Officers on patrol near Mount Sinai Hospital said they heard gunfire and saw a gray Chevrolet Impala speeding westbound, followed closely by a Nissan Rogue. As both vehicles turned south onto California Avenue, police saw Morales firing a gun from the Rogue toward the Impala, according to a police report…
