Shootings left 23 people wounded and two people dead in Chicago over the weekend, the fewest victims for the same weekend since at least 2015, according to HeyJackass, a site that independently tracks city crime data using open-source and official databases. The victims, 20 men and 5 women, ranged in age from 18 to 65.
Adding to the relatively positive trend, no children were shot and there were no mass shootings, defined as incidents in which four or more people are struck by gunfire.
One of the weekend’s most brazen attacks resulted in no serious injuries: Three masked gunmen ambushed an off-duty Chicago police officer in Back of the Yards early Sunday morning, authorities said. Around 6:13 a.m., the 30-year-old officer was near her garage in the 4800 block of South Bishop Street when a white sedan pulled up and three masked gunmen jumped out and opened fire.
