CHICAGO — The Mayor’s Office is recommending the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigate when there are allegations police helped federal immigration officers — which could finally spur an investigation into the Police Department’s actions during a controversial June 4 immigration raid in the South Loop.
Several alderpeople, including members of the city’s immigration committee, have repeatedly pushed for the city to investigate if police violated Chicago’s sanctuary city ordinance in their response to the raid and the protest that formed around it. But there’s been prolonged confusion among city officials over what agency would investigate.
The Mayor’s Office has now said that agency should be the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, the Police Department watchdog that investigates police violence and misconduct. The office conducted an internal review to make that determination, releasing the results to Block Club Monday…
