Surveillance video reveals mailbox theft strategy in Chicago apartment buildings

CHICAGO (WGN) — Surveillance video showed three thieves entering the lobby of an Edgewater apartment building while tenants were asleep early last Thursday morning, where they used a specific strategy to steal packages from residents’ mailboxes.

Equipped with an arrow key, or a master key used by a postal carrier to open hundreds of mailboxes, the thieves opened all 77 mailboxes in the building around 1:40 a.m. and stole anything of value inside.

The owner of the building, found near the intersection of North Kenmore and West Thorndale, said their maintenance staff sent the video this morning and they are in the process of filing police reports for every mailbox. One of the vandalized mailboxes belongs to Bailey Rapavi…
