Chicago family says $233,000 water bill is a mistake but city won’t back down

The stress of a six-figure utility bill is weighing on Diane Carli.

“They’re going to put me in my grave, because I might look all, all ‘peaches and cream,’ but inside you’re killing me,” 82-year-old Carli tearfully told NBC 5 Responds in front of her family’s vacant home in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood.

The home has been in Carli’s family for decades and holds a lot of memories. Her daughter, Lisa, pointed to a boarded-up window in the back of the property and told NBC 5 Responds, “I have a boyhood picture of my dad and his mom looking out this window.”…
