Man who got shot in the head after pointing gun at off-duty cop gets sentenced to time served

A man accused of flashing gang signs and pointing a gun at another man in a McDonald’s parking lot two years ago, only to get shot in the head because the other man was an off-duty Chicago police officer, just got a little salt in his wound: an 18-month prison sentence for illegally possessing the firearm.

But, with more than 1,000 days of credit built up from time in jail and on electronic monitoring, 27-year-old Carlos Negrete isn’t expected to serve a single day in prison.

Prosecutors said the off-duty officer had just finished a shift at McCormick Place around 10:30 p.m. on June 9, 2023, and drove to the McDonald’s at 2844 West 47th Street. Surveillance video allegedly captured Negrete pulling his SUV alongside the officer’s car about 30 minutes later. Negrete exchanged words, flashed gang signs, then pointed a handgun at the cop, prosecutors said shortly after the shooting.

Believing he was about to be shot, the officer pulled his gun and fired, striking Negrete in the forehead. Despite the wound, Negrete sped off and eventually turned up at Mt. Sinai Hospital in the same SUV, although it was being driven by someone else, officials said…
