Chicago protesters swarm ICE detention facility in chaotic rebuke of mayor’s new rule

Tensions in Chicago boiled over Friday as anti-ICE protesters pushed back against authorities wearing riot gear over opposition to the mayor’s controversial rule limiting access to the local detention facility.

Mayor Brandon Johnson dictated that protests outside the ICE detention center cannot occur before 9 a.m. local time. The new limitation seemed to outrage demonstrators seen taunting police officers in a video posted to X. Last Friday, about 250 people violated the rule, leading to a tumultuous encounter with local police and ICE agents.

Following Saturday night rallies that “degenerated into chaos,” Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson stated on Monday that she had issued an executive order reducing the size of the approved protest area outside the suburb’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.

Protests are now only allowed outside the ICE facility on Beach Street and will no longer be allowed at 2000 S. 25th Ave., according to the decision, which was reached after consulting with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police…
