North Center man opened fire after mother’s boyfriend attacked her at party: prosecutors

A 23-year-old North Side man has been detained on charges that he fatally shot his mother’s boyfriend during a family gathering in North Center last week.

Gabriel Medina is accused of killing his mother’s boyfriend, 53-year-old Timothy Martin, around 10:36 p.m. Friday, October 17, inside an apartment in the 2800 block of North Leavitt Street.

Assistant State’s Attorney Sheri Bennet said the shooting unfolded during a birthday party for Medina’s mother, who had been dating Martin for about three months. Around 8 p.m., friends gathered outside the family’s home to sing “Happy Birthday” before going inside, where Martin set up his DJ equipment and began playing music while others danced, Bennet said.

At some point during the evening, Medina’s mother went to use the bathroom, and Martin followed her. Inside, he allegedly grabbed her by the hair, pushed her, and yelled. When the door opened, a witness saw Martin throw her to the floor, prosecutors said. As a witness helped her up, Martin walked away and resumed DJ duties…
