Second man charged in murder of 18-year-old after massive West Side street party

A second man is now charged in connection with the murder and attempted murder of two 18-year-old men during a chaotic summer night on Chicago’s West Side. The shooting came two hours after six other people were shot during a massive street gathering that the victims had attended.

On Thursday, Judge Ankur Srivastava detained 21-year-old Lorenzo Lancaster of Merrillville, Indiana, with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery. Prosecutors charged 35-year-old Ortez Owens with the same counts in August.

According to prosecutors, the August 10 shooting followed a massive street party in the 100 block of North Lacrosse Avenue that had been promoted on social media. Around 2:48 a.m., six people were shot at the gathering, including a 22-year-old woman who died.

Roughly two hours later, around 5 a.m., Williams and his friends were walking south on Lavergne Avenue near Maypole when Owens and Lancaster pulled up in a white Toyota Camry, prosecutors said in a detention petition. Owens allegedly got out and began speaking with the group about damage that had been done to his car’s sunroof.
