Local Resident Calls for Stricter Immigration Enforcement After Daughter’s Fatal Crash in Illinois

Joe Abraham, whose daughter Katie Abraham died in a car accident in Illinois, has called for stricter immigration enforcement. Katie died on January 19, 2025, when a drunk driver, Julio Cucul-Bol, a Guatemalan national in the U.S. without legal status, collided with her vehicle at a red light. The case has led to discussion about Illinois’ sanctuary policies and their effect on public safety.

In an op-ed highlighted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Abraham criticized Illinois officials for supporting policies that he says encourage illegal immigration. He stated that these policies may suggest there are no consequences for violating immigration laws, which he believes could put residents at risk and leave migrants vulnerable to exploitation.
