Teen on pretrial release accused of shooting man, running resale app robbery traps

A 16-year-old boy tried to kill a man on the West Side while being on pretrial release for charges pending in juvenile court, prosecutors said. The boy, John Stamps, is also accused of robbing people while on pretrial release by luring them into traps via Facebook Marketplace and a resale app.

According to newly filed allegations, Stamps shot an 18-year-old man in the chest and back on the evening of November 3 in the 5600 block of West Madison Street. Officers responding to a “person shot” call found the victim collapsed in a second-floor hallway, unable to speak. His mother told police he entered through the back of the home, said he had been shot, and fell to the floor. He has undergone multiple surgeries at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Prosecutors said a witness remembered seeing the victim outside a nearby store with three other people, including Stamps. Surveillance video captured the group approaching the victim, who walked away a short time later. Stamps followed, chased him into an alley, raised a gun, and opened fire, according to the allegations…
