A 27-year-old man who shot another man in the head and then picked up the victim’s marijuana cigarette from the ground before walking away has been sentenced to life in prison. A jury convicted Quntin Buchanan of two counts of murder on August 15, and Judge Alfredo Maldonado handed down the sentence on Wednesday.
Prosecutors said Jeremiah Pruckler, 20, met two childhood friends to hang out and smoke marijuana in a rear vestibule of the Dearborn Homes at 2900 South State Street on November 10, 2023. Surveillance footage allegedly showed Buchanan arriving a few minutes later, wearing a face mask and a hoodie with the word “Quality” printed on the back.
Witnesses told police that Buchanan sat on a nearby staircase for a few minutes. He eventually walked up behind Pruckler and shot him once in the back of the head, prosecutors claimed. Pruckler’s friends ran for safety.
Prosecutors claimed Buchanan bent over Pruckler’s body, picked up the dying man’s joint, and walked away. Buchanan fled to his mother’s house and knocked on the door, telling a relative that he had killed someone, according to prosecutors.
