New Year’s Eve flipped into New Year’s Day with a grimly familiar scene in Chicago, as at least six people were wounded in separate shootings stretching from the Loop to multiple South Side neighborhoods. Police said the violence unfolded between about 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and roughly 4 a.m. on New Year’s Day, sending several victims to area hospitals and detectives to multiple crime scenes.
Man shot in the Loop
In the Loop, a 37-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 2 a.m. and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition, according to ABC7 Chicago. Police believe the gunfire may have happened inside an apartment, and Area Three detectives are investigating, as reported by CBS Chicago.
South Side shootings leave several injured
Chicago police said additional shootings on the South Side, including in Back of the Yards, the South Loop, and South Shore, brought the total number of wounded to at least six. In one case, a 30-year-old man drove himself to a hospital after being shot in the leg on the 5100 block of South Damen, where a witness reported seeing a black SUV as the suspect vehicle.
Two other victims were each shot twice on the 1400 block of West 51st Street and were hospitalized in good condition. Elsewhere, a 43-year-old man in the South Loop was hit twice in the leg, and a 33-year-old man in South Shore was treated for a wound to his hand. No arrests had been made as of early Thursday, according to an overnight roundup by WGN.
Police ask witnesses to come forward
Detectives are now working to piece together what happened in each case and are asking anyone with information to contact the Chicago police. Details on possible motives and suspect descriptions remain limited, CBS Chicago reported.
