Police warn of scam texts posing as Cook County court orders

If you received a text with an official-looking court order from Cook County, you’re not alone, and it’s a scam.

The Oswego Police Department says the messages have been circulating in Illinois and other states and include a QR code to scan in order to make a payment and avoid legal action.

Police say courts and law enforcement will never solicit payment via text and note that the fake order contains other red flags, such as listing a judge named John Smith and not including the name of the accused…
