The man accused of setting an arson fire that claimed the life of Chicago Firefighter and EMT Michael Altman last week appeared in court for the first time Monday. Sheaves Slate, 27, was ordered detained pending trial by Judge Luciano Panici Jr. after prosecutors laid out a detailed account of what they believe happened last Monday in Rogers Park.
Slate previously lived with a friend in a third-floor apartment at the building in the 1700 block of West North Shore Avenue, Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara said, but he was no longer a resident there.
The night before the fire, on March 15, two tenants saw Slate in the laundry room, and video footage showed him going to his old apartment on the third floor, where he knocked on the door demanding to speak with a former roommate, Pekara said.
