Chicago man convicted in scam that drained elderly Marathon County woman’s savings

WAUSAU — A Chicago man was convicted this week in Marathon County in a scam that stripped an elderly woman of more than $135,000 in savings, court records show.

Tao Wu, 37, appeared March 24 in Marathon County Circuit Court before Judge Mike Moran after being convicted of conspiracy to commit theft of movable property exceeding $100,000.

Moran ordered a presentence investigation, known as a PSI, and gave the Department of Corrections 60 days to complete it. A PSI is a report prepared for the judge before sentencing. It typically includes information about the defendant’s background, criminal history and the impact of the crime, and may also include sentencing recommendations.
