Prosecutor blasts SAFE-T Act after repeat DUI suspect with child in car is released

CHICAGO (WGN) — A man on probation for a DUI was busted again for drunk driving, this time with a toddler in the car. But prosecutors say Illinois’ SAFE-T Act prevented the judge from ordering the man be locked-up until trial.

“I think the judge did feel this person was a danger to the community but under the law he could not detain the defendant and he had to be released with conditions,” DuPage County state’s attorney Bob Berlin told WGN News.

Elmhurst police stopped Alexis Lara, 24, just before 10 p.m. on March 29 after witnessing his car veering toward a lane of oncoming traffic.
