South Side Teen Gunned Down in Englewood Gas Station Ambush

An 18-year-old man was shot and killed inside a gas station in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon, turning an otherwise routine stop into a deadly crime scene. Officers responding to reports of gunfire in the 6600 block of South Wentworth Avenue found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Area detectives have opened a homicide investigation.

What police say

Chicago police told CBS Chicago the shooting unfolded around 4:18 p.m., when four people got out of an unknown vehicle and opened fire inside the business, hitting the 18-year-old multiple times. The attackers then climbed back into the vehicle and took off. No arrests had been reported at the time of the account.

Where this fits in the city’s trend

Even as citywide homicides declined in 2025, gun violence has remained heavily concentrated in neighborhoods like Englewood, which continue to absorb the brunt of the trauma and loss, as WTTW’s Chicago Tonight reported. City officials and community leaders are still debating how best to keep the numbers moving in the right direction, weighing tools and funding that range from gunshot-detection technology to community violence-intervention programs.
