Kentucky Deputy Critically Wounded in Shooting Identified as Former Chicago Police Officer

A Kentucky sheriff’s deputy who was critically injured in a shooting this week has been identified as a former Chicago police officer with years of service in law enforcement.

Deputy Rick Coyle, currently serving with the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office, was shot Thursday evening while carrying out emergency guardianship paperwork at a residence in Sturgis, a small town near the Indiana border. Authorities say the situation escalated quickly, leading to an exchange of gunfire between Coyle and a 60-year-old suspect.
