IG: Former mayoral staffer tried to steer $9M to contractor who hired their kid

CHICAGO — A former senior staffer in the Chicago mayor’s office is accused of using their position to solicit a city contractor to hire their child. After the child was placed in an internship, the city’s inspector general determined the mayoral staffer then tried to facilitate more than $9M in unauthorized payments to the contractor.

Citing city confidentiality regulations, the inspector general’s report does not identify the staffer or say when it happened. However, Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office tells WGN Investigates the employee was a member of former Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration and is not currently employed by the city.

Lightfoot did not immediately respond to a request for comment…
