Chicago Man Charged After Shots Fired At U.S. Marshals In Gary

Federal prosecutors say a Chicago man opened fire on U.S. Marshals during a morning warrant raid in Gary, leaving bullet holes in a nearby home and a damaged police drone before he was taken into custody.

Brian “Shug” Billups, 46, is accused of firing shots from near the east door of a Matthews Street home on April 30 while a SWAT team used an armored vehicle to force its way inside, according to court filings and police reports. Investigators later reported finding a handgun in a bedroom.

Federal charges and court date

Billups was charged May 1 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana with assault of federal officers and employees and with using a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, according to the Chicago Tribune. A federal court hearing is scheduled for June 8, the paper reports.

What happened at the scene

Authorities say U.S. Marshals and local officers showed up just after 7 a.m. at a house in the 700 block of Matthews Street. When the situation escalated, a SWAT team rolled in with an armored vehicle and used it to breach a door, according to police.

After the confrontation, officers reported finding bullet holes in a house across the street. A drone sent in to help locate the suspect was also damaged, investigators said.

Suspect, records and custody

Records reviewed by the Chicago Tribune indicate Billups is from Chicago, is reportedly affiliated with the Black Disciples, and has a pending federal heroin-dealing case in Chicago. Defense attorney Richard Kling declined to comment to the paper. Authorities said Billups is currently being held in custody.

Legal implications

The assault and firearms counts against Billups are being pursued in the Northern District of Indiana and carry significant potential prison time if proved. Specific penalties will depend on how prosecutors charge the case and how the court rules, but the matter will proceed through federal rather than state court, with the first key hearing set for June 8.

Neighborhood impact and next steps

Neighbors on the normally quiet block were left rattled by the early-morning raid that, according to police, ended with a damaged drone and bullet marks on nearby homes. Officials have not released additional details on injuries or any other arrests…
