Kentucky Top Court Upholds Murder Verdict for Driver Who Hit 99 MPH While Drunk

Kentucky’s Supreme Court has upheld the murder conviction of a man who was driving nearly 100 mph with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit when he slammed head-on into another driver’s car, killing him. Christopher Jackson, now 44, is serving a 35-year sentence for the December 2023 crash that killed 62-year-old Gordon Torline.

The court issued a unanimous decision rejecting Jackson’s appeal, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. A Kenton County jury had already convicted Jackson of murder, criminal mischief, wanton endangerment and aggravated operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, with Kenton County Circuit Judge Patricia Summe presiding over the trial. Justice Christopher Shea Nickell wrote for the court that “sufficient evidence supported the jury’s finding of guilt, and we discern no basis to disturb its judgment,” per the same report.

Prosecutors said Jackson had been drinking before he went to pick up his fiancée from work on Dec. 22, 2023. According to FOX19, Jackson was driving approximately 99 mph in a 45 mph zone when his vehicle struck a curb, skidded out of its lane and crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with Torline’s car on Industrial Road in Florence just before 4 p.m. His blood alcohol concentration was later measured at .241, more than three times Kentucky’s legal limit.

A Grim Diagnosis and a Chilling Admission

Torline spent weeks on life support after suffering numerous serious injuries in the crash before he died of a brain hemorrhage, according to facts in the case. Officers who responded to the scene observed that Jackson had alcohol-smelling breath and was unsteady on his feet. Jackson admitted to drinking and told officers he had been drinking the day before, and at one point told them, “I’m going to jail.”…
