Hurricane Helene remnants blast through leaving thousands without power, downed trees

The Greater Cincinnati region was left dealing with widespread power outages and damage to trees and homes after winds and rain from the remnants of Hurricane Helene lashed the area Friday evening.

Before it arrived in the region, the storm system wreaked havoc across the Southeast leaving at least 39 people dead and millions without power.

In Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky, though a High Wind Warning issued through 10 p.m. was lifted before 8 p.m., there was plenty of damage to deal with after gusting winds reached 40 to 60 mph. Power outages at their peak numbered 125,000 customers in the region. There were numerous reports of downed trees and limbs.

In West Chester Township, a tree fell on a school bus and took down some power lines. For a brief time, the children had to wait inside the bus for emergency crews to give the all-clear. The bus was able to continue its route and get the students home safely.

Several school districts in the region dismissed students early and some canceled evening activities, including Friday night football games .
