Local mom asks for chair at graduation for daughter who died by suicide; district says no

MILFORD, Ohio (WKRC) – A Milford mom is fighting for an empty seat at graduation for her daughter who died by suicide, but the school district said no.

The mom said that she has one more board meeting to plead her case. 15-year-old Caylee Mastin died by suicide two years ago. Her mom, Julie Mastin, wants there to be an empty chair at graduation not only to honor her daughter but also to raise awareness about teen mental health.

The district said that it’ll instead honor Caylee Mastin in a more subtle way. The Milford school board said that a chair goes against the district’s guidelines to honor a deceased student. Instead, Caylee Mastin’s name will be printed in the graduation program and read aloud…
