Moms fight for harsher penalties for drivers after local student is killed crossing street

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A pair of moms and a lawmaker are fighting for harsher penalties for drivers who hit students with their cars.

15-year-old Lakota East student Aspen Runnels was killed in 2024 while crossing the street. A bill named after Aspen was introduced in an Ohio House committee on Wednesday.

Two moms want your support to increase charges for drivers who hit a pedestrian in a school zone. Christina Alcorn lost her son Runnels to a driver who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge. Trisha Parnell’s daughter Maddy was hit by a car outside Lakota West High School in 2018 and took weeks to recover.

That driver was charged with speeding and failing to yield. The moms don’t feel like the punishments fit the crimes…
