‘Long overdue’: Local school district to offer paid family leave for teachers

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) has become one of the few districts in Ohio to offer paid family leave to its teachers.

This new policy is part of a three-year collective bargaining agreement between CPS and the Cincinnati Teachers Union, providing educators with 15 days of paid family leave. Teachers can also use an additional 45 days of sick leave, totaling up to 60 paid days or 12 weeks.

“My initial reaction is it seems long overdue,” said Ryan Shearer, a CPS teacher and union vice president of organizing. “A lot of teachers don’t really realize that we didn’t have a program or a policy for that until they get pregnant and realize that they have to use all their sick time.”…
