Accused murderer, probation violator previously flagged by officers before OTR stabbing

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — City leaders on Tuesday acknowledged that Cincinnati police officers had crossed paths with a man who was wanted for probation violations before that suspect went on to allegedly kill a popular Over-the-Rhine gym owner in his home.

Mayor Aftab Pureval and CPD Chief Teresa Theetge said they didn’t know about that violation and that an officer who did a computer background check on the man didn’t flag it at the time. Mordecia Black is accused of killing Patrick Heringer early in June. He was on probation after serving a full prison sentence for felonious assault and rioting.

Black had cut off his ankle bracelet in February, prompting his parole officer to issue a warrant and place his name on a national database. However, Pureval and Theetge previously stated that officers were not notified of the warrant. Tuesday, Pureval and Theetge admitted that officers had encountered Black’s name before Heringer’s death but still claimed they were unaware of the warrant…
