Rickey Jackson, an exoneree from the Ohio Innocence Project (OIP), recently spoke with WVXU’s Cincinnati Edition about his experience with wrongful conviction and release. Jackson spent 39 years in prison for a 1975 murder he did not commit. He is the subject of the documentary ‘Lovely Jackson,’ now available on Amazon Prime. The film, directed by Matt Waldeck and co-written by Waldeck and Jackson, covers his time in prison, including three and a half years on death row, and his release in 2014.
Jackson was convicted at age 18 based on the testimony of a 12-year-old witness, which was later found to be coerced. In the interview, he discussed Ohio’s death penalty laws at the time and the commutation of his sentence to life in prison.
