First generation college student is breaking barriers and inspiring her family

CINCINNATI — The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College says about 45 percent of its students are the first in their families to attend college. It’s one student’s goal to not only pursue a higher education but to inspire her siblings to do the same.

First generation student Crysteannah Carpenter said she went into foster care at 8 years old, with her three younger sisters. The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash college student said she and her sisters faced challenges and tough times growing up.

“We kind of were battling alcohol addiction from our mom, like abuse we spent most of our life there, up until I was 18,” Carpenter said.

Fast forward to now, and Carpenter is 24 years old and said growing up in foster care in Ohio made her who she is today and brought her here as a pre-med student…
