Mother accused of fatally shooting son because she didn’t want to give up custody

GRANT COUNTY, N.M. (WKRC) – A Wyoming mother faces first-degree murder and child abuse charges after authorities say she killed her 11-month-old son during a custody dispute.

Madeline Daly, 35, allegedly fled Wyoming with the child after a court granted custody to the boy’s father, Jake Stoner. The child, Basil Stoner, was reported missing Nov. 19, prompting a manhunt that ended in New Mexico.

According to a press release from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, deputies located Daly in an RV and attempted to negotiate her surrender. Daly refused to exit the vehicle, prompting a SWAT response. Before officers intervened, a gunshot was heard. Deputies found Daly with a handgun and her son suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Daly was subdued. Despite life-saving efforts, the child died before reaching a hospital…
