The case of the missing DAAP statues

Alan Marrero, an alum of the University of Cincinnati’s (UC) College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning (DAAP), was in for a surprise when he learned that one of his college projects is currently sitting on a ledge in downtown Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) as a part of a UC DAAP exhibition – without his permission.

“Well, I guess my career just got an upgrade,” Marrero said as he reacted to the news.

It was a whirlwind week for Ethan and Violet, the two sculptures that Marrero initially made for an installation art course in the winter of 2005. For 20 years now, the pair have perched on the same ledge of the DAAP building, and in that time, have made quite the name for themselves amongst students. So, when students arrived back to campus from winter break, the halls of DAAP’s fifth floor felt a bit bare…
