Army Corps keeping an eye on icy Ohio River

CINCINNATI — While the Ohio River is still partially frozen, it’s causing some challenges for river traffic. But with a thaw later this week, that could also mean some flooding concerns in the area.

The Ohio River looks like an ice rink in some areas, which is causing slowdowns for these barges.

Something Waylon Humphrey, the Chief of Operations of the Great Lakes and Ohio River division with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers said they’re working to help.

“As they’re trying to work their way up and down, it almost makes like an ice jam on the lead barge,” Humphrey said. “And then they’ll have to disconnect their boat from it and go around to the front to push it out of the way and then go back and get on the rear of the tow and start pushing again.”

The ice has to make its way through the dams first so that the boats can fit and continue on their journey. Humphrey said different portions of the Ohio River are more frozen than others, and it’s not all because of the low temperatures…
