Columbus has a problem brewing less than two hours down Interstate 70. The Buckeyes have built their program on locking down Ohio’s best players before rival schools even get a chance. Ryan Day’s staff decided to skip over a Cincinnati prospect who just made them look foolish in front of the entire recruiting world.
Sunday at The Opening Finals in Indianapolis turned into a nightmare for Ohio State’s evaluation process. Monsanna Torbert from Princeton High School grabbed the MVP trophy after shutting down every receiver who lined up across from him. The four-star defensive back also clocked a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash to win fastest man honors. Indiana has its commitment. The Buckeyes never sent an offer.
Torbert brings something different to the secondary that most prospects don’t have. He spent his junior season running the offense and putting up big passing numbers. That quarterback experience gives him an advantage in reading routes and anticipating what receivers want to do before they make their breaks. 247Sports labeled him the best player at the entire regional event.
He locked in with the Hoosiers back in January at the Navy All-American Bowl. The chatter about the reevaluation exploded immediately after Sunday’s workout.
