In recent years, Turfway Park’s marquee Kentucky Derby (G1) prep race has risen in influence. The 2022 Kentucky Derby upset winner Rich Strike , and the 2023 Derby runner-up, Two Phil’s, both came out of starts in the Jeff Ruby Steaks, and last year’s Ruby winner, Final Gambit, checked in fourth in the Derby.
The grade 3 stakes held on Turfway’s all-weather Tapeta Footings track drew a very competitive 12-horse field, and nabbing first (100 qualifying points) or second (50 points) will virtually ensure a starting-gate berth in the Run for the Roses May 2.
