Meteor confirmed to be cause of loud “boom” heard across Northeast Ohio

A loud “boom” was heard across Northeast Ohio on Tuesday morning. According to FOX 8 and other media outlets some people reporting hearing the sound as far as New York, Pennsylvania, Cincinnati and Kentucky.

Later in the afternoon, it was confirmed from the National Weather Service and NASA that the noise came from a meteorite impact. Brian Mitchell, an NWS forecaster, said a satellite image that maps lightning picked up a flash at 9:01 a.m. Tuesday morning. The flash was detected 50 miles above Lake Erie, according to NASA.

The meteor broke up above Lake Erie and fragments potentially landed in Medina County, according to NASA. Around that same time, many reports came in of a “boom” sound that allegedly shook buildings, scared pets and startled residents. Videos have poured in from residents either hearing the sound left by the meteor or seeing it shoot through the sky…
